PSA Tests - Important Or A Waste Of Time And Money?

Thursday, December 29, 2011 · Posted in , , ,

More and more it is becoming known how unreliable PSA tests are for accurately indicating whether or not someone has prostate cancer. Does this mean they are a waste of time and money? Or should you continue to get the test?

If you asked ten different people those questions, you would likely get ten different answers.

But the reality is, PSA tests, while useful, are not something you should take to the bank as being 100% accurate when it comes to you having prostate cancer or other related health problems.

It is true that men with elevated levels of PSA in their blood due often have prostate problems.

But, there are also many men who have high PSA levels who have nothing wrong whatsoever with their prostates. On other hand, there are also many men who have had low levels of PSA in their blood who were found to have prostate cancer. But, because they had a false sense of security (because they thought they were safe due to their low PSA number), they ended up either dying or the cancer spread.

Either way is bad.

And, this is one reason not to rely on the test for anything.

Yes, it can be a useful tool.

And in as much as you can gauge whether your PSA levels are trending up or down over time, it can be a good thing.

But don't take the results as "gospel" that anything is right or wrong.

It's just one of many ways to test for prostate cancer.

And that is why PSA tests and their results should be taken with a grain of salt.

Cancer Prevention - Diet and Exercise Are Important

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 · Posted in , , ,

According to data collected by the World Health Organisation, high income countries tend to be more obese, are greater consumers of alcohol, do much less exercise generally and have a much higher risk of cancer than other lower-income countries, by comparison.

Denmark is rated the number one country for highest cancer risk, with the UK at number 22. This goes to show that cancer is closely related to lifestyle factors and is that there is therefore something that can be done to lower the risks and prevent many cancers from developing, including cancers of the breast, lung, mouth, colon, liver, bowel and prostate cancer.

Lifestyle Changes

It is envisaged that if we did something to change these lifestyle habits, in other words if we drank less alcohol, exercised more and followed a healthy diet plan with less fatty meats, biscuits, cakes, pastries and more fresh fruits and vegetables cancer cases could be cut by as much as a third. Some of the results may be slightly skewed by higher income countries being better able to diagnose cancer and better able to collect and organise the data they collect. But it cannot be denied that these countries also have the highest level of potentially dangerous lifestyle habits and this needs to be addressed.

Early Diagnosis

Having said that, the higher income countries also have better screening facilities in place, more awareness among the population at large and in medical establishments generally and better treatments on offer once cancer is actually diagnosed. This has resulted in higher rates of survival than ever before. If it is diagnosed early enough, most people will survive.

Cancer Prevention

In my opinion, however, prevention is definitely better than cure. Obesity leads to all kinds of problems, not just cancer, such as diabetes and bowel obstruction and it also puts a strain on the heart. Heavy drinking takes its toll on the liver which is the main organ for cleansing toxins from the body, so a damaged liver can lead to all kinds of complications from the toxins left in the body that cannot be cleared out.

Lack of exercise results in not enough oxygen going into the blood cells and this weakens them and makes it harder to fight off infections and other invading viruses. Cancer also thrives in a poorly oxygenated environment so the risk goes up as exercise goes down. All of these things can be addressed. Simply limit your consumption of alcohol to a level that the liver can manage, eat fresh foods, leaner meat and less pastries and exercise just 20 minutes a week.

Why Regular Prostate Checkups Are Important

Friday, November 25, 2011 · Posted in , , ,

While many men cite that it is not a very fun procedure, prostate checkups are extremely important to ensure health and wellness. A prostate checkup is also referred to as a digital rectal exam and usually involves a medical professional inserting a gloved and lubricated finger into the man's rectum. During this examination, medical professionals are looking for abnormalities along the prostate, such as lumps, bumps and spots. The exam may not indicate what is wrong, but it does answer the question if further testing must take place.

According to the National Alliance of State Prostate Cancer Coalitions, men at the age of 40 and on should have regular, annual prostate checkups. As men become older, they become prone to a number of diseases. There are two main reasons for the checkup. For one, medical professionals can check for benign prostatic hyperplasia as well as prostatitis. Benign prostatic hyperplasia refers to an enlarged prostate which can compress the urethra, causing bladder retention. Prostatitis refers to the inflammation of the prostate. A prostate checkup will tell the medical professional that prostatitis exists; however, further checking will determine whether it is acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic prostatitis without infection, or asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. Whichever one it is, the medical professional will be able to dictate the right course of treatment.

Prostate checkups are also the best form of early detection for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is extremely common and approximately one out of six men will be diagnosed with this form of cancer in their life. The early stages of prostate cancer are known to be asymptomatic and can only be detected with a prostate examination. Many men can lives years without ever noticing until it is too late. If detected early enough with this checkup, prostate cancer can be cured and survival rates go way up.

There are a number of factors that may put some men more at risk for prostate cancer than others, including age, family history of cancer, hereditary, lifestyle and race. If a family has a history of prostate cancer, it is extremely important that they get checked as well. And while men cannot control their heredity, age, family history and race, they can control their lifestyle. A number of cases of cancer have been linked with obesity. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle will lower one's risk of prostate cancer...not to mention a number of other health conditions.

Aside from the prostate, the prostate checkup can find a number of other health concerns. This can include the inspection and evaluation of hemorrhoids and tumors in the area. If a man has a neurological disease or fecal incontinence, a prostate checkup is often utilized to estimate the overall tonicity of the man's anal sphincter.

The significance of a yearly prostate checkup can never be stressed enough. Numerous men die every year due to prostate cancer, which could have been evaded with a simple prostate checkup with their doctor.

Central Maryland Urology Associates (CMUA) HIFU Center was established in 2010 for the treatment of localized prostate cancer using HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound).Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men, and is the second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer.

The CMUA HIFU Center is headed by Dr. Kevin Blumenthal, one of only a select few urologists trained in HIFU in the entire Mid-Atlantic region.
