Fibroadenoma |Cause, symptoms, Diagnosis and Homeopathy

Wednesday, August 29, 2012 · Posted in , ,

Fibroadenoma is lump or a tumor in the breast which is benign (noncancerous). Usually it is not life threatening but can turn to cancer rarely.
It effects mostly at 20s and 30s. It can occur during teenage time also.

Causes for Fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is made up of breast gland tissue and tissue that helps support the breast gland tissue.
The exact cause is unknown. It is linked with the
hormone as the lump reduces after menopause.

-->
Signs and symptoms of Fibroadenoma

Fibroadenomas are usually single lumps, but about 10 - 15% of women have several lumps that may affect both breasts.
Lumps may be:
    Firm
   Easily moveable under the skin
   Rubbery
    Painless
During pregnancy they may grow in size. Usually they have smooth, well-defined borders. After menopause Fibroadenomas often get smaller (if a woman is not taking hormone replacement therapy).

Diagnosis

After the physical examination one of the following tests should be done,
    Breast ultrasound
    Mammogram
If needed FNAC is done to rule out the malignancy.

Complications

Usually Fibroadenomas will not make any serious complications to your life.
But if there is a complex mass in your breast, there is a chance to grow the tissue malignant.

Homeopathy for Fibroadenoma:-

A constitutional homeopathic medicine can cure your Fibroadenomas. There are many homeopathic remedies which will deal with it. For that you will have to consult a classical homeopath.
I am listing some medicine which cannot be taken without your doctor’s advice.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION (Impotence) | Cause, Diagnosis, Diet & HOMEOPATHY

Thursday, June 28, 2012 · Posted in , ,

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It is also called Impotence.
A penile erection is the hydraulic effect of blood entering and being retained in sponge-like bodies within the penis. It is not necessarily a normal part of aging. The process is often initiated as a result of sexual arousal, when signals are transmitted from the brain to nerves in the penis. Erectile dysfunction is indicated when an erection is difficult to produce.
Disorders such as erectile dysfunction (ED) and female sexual dysfunction are becoming increasingly more important as a result of the aging population and newer therapies.

What Causes ED?

We can classify the causative factors as given below.

Vascular causes
Vascular diseases account for nearly half of all cases of ED in men older than 50 years. Vascular diseases include atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, myocardial infarction, and arterial hypertension.
·         Atherosclerosis
·         Peripheral vascular disease
·         Myocardial infarction
·         Arterial hypertension
·         Vascular injury from radiation therapy
·         Vascular injury from prostate cancer treatment
·         Blood vessel and nerve trauma (eg, due to long-distance bicycle riding)
·         Medications for treatment of vascular disease
Systemic diseases
·         Diabetes mellitus
·         Scleroderma
·         Renal failure
·         Liver cirrhosis
·         Idiopathic hemochromatosis
·         Cancer and cancer treatment
·         Dyslipidemia
·         Hypertension
Neurologic causes
·         Epilepsy
·         Stroke
·         Multiple sclerosis
·         Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome
·         Alzheimer disease
·         Trauma
Endocrine conditions
·         Hyperthyroidism
·         Hypothyroidism
·         Hypogonadism
·         Diabetes
Respiratory disease
·         Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
·         Sleep apnea
Psychiatric conditions
·         Depression
·         Widower syndrome
·         Performance anxiety
·         Posttraumatic stress disorder
Penile conditions
·         Peyronie disease
·         Epispadias
·         Priapism
Nutritional states
·         Malnutrition
·         Zinc deficiency
Hematologic diseases
·         Sickle cell anemia
·         Leukemias
Medications
·         Antihypertensives
·         Antidepressants
·         Antipsychotics
·         Antiulcer agents (eg, cimetidine)
·         5-Alpha reductase inhibitors (eg, finasteride, dutasteride)
·         Cholesterol-lowering agents
Surgical procedures
·         Brain and spinal cord procedures
·         Retroperitoneal or pelvic lymph node dissection
·         Aortoiliac or aortofemoral bypass
·         Abdominal perineal resection
·         Proctocolectomy
·         Transurethral resection of the prostate
·         Radical prostatectomy
·         Cryosurgery of the prostate
·         Cystectomy
Lifestyle habits
·         Smocking
·         Alcohol conception
·         Lack of exercise
ED has a high prevalence in men over than 50 years. The incidence increase with aging and its ethiology appears to be multifactorial. The anamnesis and detailed physical evaluation ought to be performed in order to detect the main etiological factors. The best approach to obtain better results is to identify the main etiology. A multidisciplinary evaluation should be recommended for all patients.

How ED is diagnosed?

There is no specific test to diagnose ED. Routine blood examination is done to exclude infections.
History:-  Sexual functioning in a male is goes through these phases- arousal (libido), erection, orgasm, ejaculation, and a refractory period. The history taking is aimed to find out in which stage the patient is suffering from.
In history taking, the doctor will be asking you about the past medications, surgery and any emotional disturbances you might have gone through.
Physical examination:- After history taking the patient is examined physically to find out the systemic causes.  If penis is not sensitive to physical touch, a problem in the nervous system may be the cause.
If there is abnormal secondary sexual characters like unusual hair growth and well developed breast , the cause may be from hormone disturbance.
Psychological examination: -interview and a questionnaire with the subject will help to rule out the psychological cause. Both the partners are interviewed in this.
Other tests: - Monitoring erections that occur during sleep-nocturnal erections-can help rule out certain psychological causes of ED. A normal healthy individual has involuntary erection during sleep. If it is absent the cause is physical.

How to treat ED?

The treatment starts after finding out the cause. Simple lifestyle rearrangement and modification will show wonders in your sexual life. The patient should quit smoking and alcohol conception and should engage in some physical activities for better results.
Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5) like sildenafil citrate (Viagra®),vardenafil HCl (Levitra®), tadalafil (Cialis®) are the commonly used drugs to treat ED.  These drugs work by relaxing the muscle cells in the penis allowing for better blood flow and production of a rigid erection.
The most common side effects are headache, stuffy nose, flushing and muscle aches. In rare cases, sildenafil can cause temporary blue-green shading of vision.

Diet to prevent ED

·         Drinking water can help flush your system but also flush cholesterol that may clog penile arteries. You should drink 100 ounces per day.
·         Eat smaller meals (about the size of your fist). You should eat about 5-6 meals daily.
·         Eating vegetables is extremely important for the vitamins, minerals and especially the fiber. The fiber will help flush the body.
·         Keep your dairy products to a minimum because of the high levels of cholesterol.
·         Avoid caffeinated beverages that may cause higher levels of stress.
·         You should eat lean meat and seafood. Avoid red meats which can clog arteries.
·         Bran cereal is great in the morning for fiber.
·         Supplement foods with high levels of zinc. Zinc deficiency is common in ED sufferers. You can get plenty of zinc with whole grain cereals, chicken, turkey, brown rice, beans and low fat yogurt.
·         Eating fruits is important but should be lessened because of too much sugar. High levels of sugar is associated with male impotence.

Homeopathy for Erectile dysfunction

Homeopathyhas shown significant results in ED.  Homeopathy has a unique method of case taking.  A complete casetaking will need a detailed explanation of mental as well as physical generals of the individual. This casetaking itself will help the physician to find out the cause. There are many medicines which will deal with ED in homeopathy.

BACK ACHE | Cause, singn & symptoms, Diagnosis, Prevention | HOMEOPATHY

Friday, June 1, 2012 · Posted in , ,

Pain in the back from cervical vertebrae to coccyx is called back pain. Lower Back pain is called as Lumbago. Back pain which leads to thighs is called sciatica. The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and all are capable of producing pain
Back pain is one of humanity's most frequent complaints. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for physician visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year

Back pain may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. Backache Is not a disease but a symptom of a illness.

-->
What cause back ache?

·         Occupational hazards:- Lifting heavy objects, prolonged standing or sitting, sitting in front of the computer for long hours at a stretch, are the most common cause of back ache.
·         Diseases of vertebral column – like pott’s spine, tumor, and disk prolapse or herniated intervertebral disk, degenerative disk disease, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, spondylosis.
·         Spinal cord infection can cause back pain.
·         Mechanical causes:- abnormal sitting postures, injury or trauma, extreme obesity, sleeping on very soft mattresses.
·         Extra spinal causes:- Peripheral vascular diseases, Hip osteo arthritis, Peripheral nerve lesion like neuropathy and herpes zoster.
·         Referred pain – of renal calculi, renal tumors, renal tuberculosis, pancreas tumor, diseases related to female genital organs.
·         Surgical causes like Lumbar puncture.
·         Prolaps of inter vertebral disc ( IVDP)
·         Gynaecological conditions like premenustral syndrome, fibroid uterus PCOS Etc…
·         Metastasis – cancer may spread to the bones like breast cancer, lung cancer and causes back pain.
·          Psychological factors: Some factors like anxiety, depression, lack of inner peace, death of a loved one, etc. contribute to back pain.
·          Obesity:Back pain increases in overweight and obese patients.

Sing and symptoms related to back ache

·         Pain that develops gradually and slowly gets worse and worse over days or weeks.
·         Constant back pain that is not eased by lying down or resting.
·         Pain that travels to the chest, or is higher in the back behind the chest.
·         Extension of the pain may occur to the other parts of the body especially to the buttocks, back of thigh, calf muscles.
Inflammatory (Arthritic) Symptoms:-
·         Morning stiffness
·         Constitutional symptoms like fever, redness and pain.
·         Pain worse at night

Diagnosis

·         Historyshould be taken to know any triggering factors like fall and trauma.
·         Physical examinationshould be done :- giant, Posture and extension of pain etc
·         Blood routine:-CBC(complete blood count) to rule out the infection.  Blood culture.
·         X-ray spineTo detect Disc prolapse
·         CT Scan and MRIto find out nerve compression and other neuropathies.
·         SLR( Straight Leg Rise ) :-  To evaluate disc herniation. Positive SLR is defined as pain in the posterior leg that radiates below the knee with the hip flexed 60 or less and the patient lying supine and is suggestive of disc herniation.

Management of backache

Making small changes to your lifestyle can reduce your risk of back pain.
If you smoke, stop. It puts you at increased risk for back problems since your blood has trouble delivering oxygen to working tissues, making your back weaker.

Prevention & precautions

·         Always stretch before exercise or other strenuous physical activity.   Don’t slouch when standing or sitting. When standing, keep your weight balanced on your feet. Your back supports weight most easily when curvature is reduced.
·         At home or work, make sure your work surface is at a comfortable height for you.
·         Sit in a chair with good lumbar support and proper position and height for the task. Keep your shoulders back. Switch sitting positions often and periodically walk around the office or gently stretch muscles to relieve tension. A pillow or rolled-up towel placed behind the small of your back can provide some lumbar support. If you must sit for a long period of time, rest your feet on a low stool or a stack of books.
·         Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
·         Sleep on your side to reduce any curve in your spine. Always sleep on a firm surface.
·         Ask for help when transferring an ill or injured family member from a reclining to a sitting position or when moving the patient from a chair to a bed.
·         Don’t try to lift objects too heavy for you. Lift with your knees, pull in your stomach muscles, and keep your head down and in line with your straight back. Keep the object close to your body. Do not twist when lifting.
·         Maintain proper nutrition and diet to reduce and prevent excessive weight, especially weight around the waistline that taxes lower back muscles. A diet with sufficient daily intake of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D helps to promote new bone growth.
·         If you smoke, quit. Smoking reduces blood flow to the lower spine and causes the spinal discs to degenerate

Bed rest versus exercise

Doctors used to recommend long periods of rest for people with backache, but research has shown this is actually bad for backs. Even crawling around on your hands and knees is better than no movement at all.
Some kinds of exercise, such as walking, don't put too much stress on your back. It's a good idea to make a start on them even if your back is a bit sore, just to get your joints moving and your heart and lungs working.
Use a firm chair when sitting down, or sit on the floor rather than a sofa that’s too soft. Similarly, make sure your bed is firm enough.

Homeopathy for Backache

Homeopathy gives better results in Chronic as well as acute back aches. There are many homeopathic remedies for back ache. Patient should consult a classical homeopath to start treatment. Homeopathy considers the patient as whole just not the disease. To prescribe a remedy a homeopath need the complete history of the disease and the patient as well.
Most commonly prescribed homeopathic medicines for back ache are
Bryonia,                 Rhus tox,
cimicifuga,             Arnica,
nux vomica,         calc carb,
lycopodium,        Hypericum,
calc phos,             Kali carb,
Sulphur ,            ruta &     Sepia etc

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR BACKACHE

Homeopathy gives better results in Chronic as well as acute back aches (Vertebral disc prolapse (IVDP), Lumbago, sciatica neck pain). There are many homeopathic remedies for back ache. Patient should consult a classical homeopath to start treatment. Homeopathy considers the patient as whole just not the disease. To prescribe a remedy a homeopath need the complete history of the disease and the patient as well.
In constitutional way of treatment a single dose of homeopathic remedy will be sufficient to bring out the cure for chronic backache.
Rhus toxicodendron
A violent pain in the back, as if broken, is the greatest characteristic of Rhus in backache. It is more characteristic than the symptom "relief from
motion", for Rhus may be indicated where the patient is worse from motion.
Rhus seems to be especially suitable to affections of the deeper muscles of the back. There are great pains, dull, bruised, and aching on attempting to rise, showing, thus, the aggravation on commencing motion. It is more suitable to the chronic forms of lumbago, while Aconite suits the acute forms, and will oftentimes give prompt relief.
The backache of Rhus is better from pressure, but worse in bed.
The Rhus patient likes to lie on something hard.

Natrium muriaticum
Natrum muriaticum has this same symptoms - backache relieved by lying on something hard. The Rhus pains are relieved by bending backwards.

Ruta graveolens
This remedy is indicated when tremendous stiffness is felt in the muscles or joints, especially after sprains or twisting injuries. The person feels lame and sore, and experiences relief from lying down.

 Sulphur
Sulphur has lumbar pains, with sudden loss of power to move; worse before a storm, reminding of Rhododendron. Petroleum and Rutahave pains in the back in the morning before rising. In Staphisagriathese pains compel the patient to get up early and move about. This symptom is found also under Kali carbonicum; it comes on about 3 a.m. , and is accompanied by pains shooting down the buttocks.

 Ledum palustre
Ledum has a stiffness in the back, similar to that experienced when one sits still for a long time.

Hypericum perforatum
Hypericum has aching in small of back and stitches, and is especially useful in women who are forced to lift and strain and go up and down stairs frequently.

Bryonia alba
Suits a lumbago of quiet type, with great aggravation on moving.
This remedy is indicated when back pain is worse from even the slightest motion. Changing position, coughing, turning, or walking may bring on sharp, excruciating pain.

Gnaphalium polycephalum
Gnaphalium will sometimes cure a chronic backache, a tired aching in the lumbar region that saps one's strength and ambition. Worse from continued motion, better resting, especially on the back. The more chronic the backache the better indicated the remedy.

Calcarea fluorica
This remedy has quite a clinical reputation for curing backache, and especially the backache simulating spinal irritation. It has pain in the lower part of the back, with a fullness or burning pain. Lumbago worse on beginning to move and relieved by continued motion, or lumbago from strains, will find in Calcarea fluorica its remedy when Rhus fails. It also follows Rhus well.

Kalium phosphoricum
Kali phosphoricum, another of the tissue remedies, has a rheumatic lameness worse after rest, and on just commencing to move; there is a paralytic tendency, worse on rising from a sitting position. Some remedies have a backache worse from sitting, notably Cobalt, Zincum, Sepia, and Cannabis Indica. Lumbago worse when first beginning to move may call for Anacardium or Conium, as well as for Rhus.
 Nux vomica
Another remedy in backache, especially if referable to spinal affections, is Nux vomica. It is in the lumbar region, is worse at night when lying in bed, of a drawing, lacerating or bruised character, with perhaps sudden stitches in the back, and a characteristic is that the patient must sit up in bed to turn over. It has also a morning backache, and the longer the patient lies in bed the more the back aches. Backache is also worse during constipation.
 Lycopodium clavatum
Burning as from coals between the scapulae; stiffness and pain in the small of the back corresponds to this remedy.
 Oxalicum acidum
Oxalic acid has an acute pain in the back relieved by change of posture; back seems too weak to support the body. The pains are worse when thinking of them, accompanied by debility and numb feeling in the limbs, aching pain in lower part of back between shoulders.

Sepia officinalis
Sepia is very frequently indicated in the backaches which are due to uterine disease. It is a general weakness in the small of the back when walking, and is worse while sitting. Sudden pain in the back, as if struck by a hammer, relieved by pressing back upon something hard.

Aesculus hippocastanum
Aesculus is often a useful remedy in backache which, like Sepia's, is worse when walking. It is a severe, continuous, dull aching in the lumbo-sacral region, affecting the sacrum and hips, and the back "gives out" when walking. Backache during pregnancy will often be suggestive of Aesculus, when especially worse from walking or stooping.

Cimicifuga racemosa
Cimicifuga has violent aching in the back in women, dependent on uterine complaints, especially in rheumatic subjects.

Arnica
Arnica is a remedy with a well-known reputation for its usefulness in injuries and pain to soft tissue and muscles. Pains are sore, lame and bruised with great sensitiveness to pressure. If the backache results from contusion or trauma then the affected part becomes blue and black due to the extravasation of blood.
Bellis pernis in Mother tincture form can help in acute pains as a pain reliever.

PREMATURE GRAYING OF HAIR | Cause, symptoms, Diet & HOMEOPATHY

Friday, April 6, 2012 · Posted in , ,

Premature graying of hair is characterized by circumscribed or general lack or loss of normal pigment. It is also called as canities, blanching of hair, gray hair, poliosis and whiteness of the hair
'Graying' of hair is due to the gradual loss of the melanocytes' pigment - melanin. In white hairs the melanocytes are absent. This is largely determined by heredity factors, hyperthyroidism and some autoimmune diseases.
Hair originates in the hair follicles. These follicles
are located in the dermis, the skin layer just below the surface layer and above the subcutaneous fat. Hair follicles are present everywhere on the surface of the body except the
lips, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. New hair is made in the hair matrix at the base of the hair follicle. Living cells in the hair matrix multiply and push upward. These cells rapidly dehydrate, die, and compact into a dense, hard mass that forms the hair shaft. The hair shaft, which is made up of dead protein, is covered by a delicate covering (cuticle) composed of platelike scales.

Hair is colored by the pigment melanin, which is also responsible for skin color. Human hair colors come from two types of melanin: eumelanin in black or brown hair and pheomelanin in auburn or blond hair.
Hair grows in cycles. Each cycle consists of a long growing phase followed by a brief transitional phase and then a short resting phase. At the end of the resting phase, the hair falls out and a new hair starts growing in the follicle, beginning the cycle again. Eyebrows and eyelashes have a growing phase of 1 to 6 months. Scalp hairs have a growing phase of 2 to 6 years. Normally, about 100 scalp hairs reach the end of the resting phase each day and fall out.
Hair growth is regulated by male hormones (androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone), which are present in both men and women, although in different amounts. Testosterone stimulates hair growth in the pubic area and underarms. Dihydrotestosterone stimulates hair growth in the beard area and hair loss at the scalp.

-->
“Hair brings one's self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground.  Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices.”
                                   ~Shana Alexander

Hair is almost like a social status for both men and women, and also children. It is society’s expectation that you will have a head of hair! Hair states ones personality and adds additional beauty t is a statement about yourself, how you have your hair. Women who desire to be beautiful almost always start with their hair. There's nothing more stunning than long, shiny, healthy hair! Elegant and versatile, long hair gives women many options when it comes to styling and creating new looks. Even though the hair is a dead tissue, it suffers from numerous hazards mirroring hair problems. Everyone who desire to be beautiful and takes hair care should understand the basics of hair.
Hair is composed of a protein substance called keratin. The average adult human being has about 10000 to 150,000 hairs on the scalp. The colour, type, and sizes varies from person to person and race to race.

Hair colour
Hair colour is the pigmentation of hair follicles due to two types of melanin:
1-     Eumelanin
2-     Pheomelanin
Generally, if more melanin is present, the colour of the hair is darker; if less melanin is present, the hair is lighter. Levels of melanin can vary over time causing a person's hair colour to change, and it is possible to have hair follicles of more than one colour.

PREMATURE HAIR GRAYING
It is an atrophic affection of hair, characterized by circumscribed or general lack or loss of normal pigment.
Premature hair graying refers to the graying of the hair in young or before age of 35 yrs
Grey hair caused by gradual reduction of melanin production over time in your hair follicle. Melanin is pigment that gives colour and smoothness to your hair. The degree of darkness of your hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.
Eventually the hair begins to lose its colour and strength. When there is less melanin in the hair follicle.
What cause premature graying??
·         Nutrition deficiency  -  Vit B, Iron, Copper and Iodine.
·         Stress
·         Heredity
·         Medical conditions – Thyroid imbalance, Vitiligo, Vit B12 deficiency anaemia… etc
·         Excessive heating of hair
·         Unclean scalp
·         Thyroid deficiencies, Warrdenburg syndrome
·         Albinism
·         Pernicious Anaemia
·         Artificial factor-: Tobacco smoking.
·         Carelessness in maintaining of hair
·         Use of certain hair oils and Shampoos

What are the symptoms?

Graying of hair before the age of 35 is generally referred as premature graying.
Lack of regular thick hair being allowed to grow is one of the common symptoms of premature hair graying
Hair becomes dry, brittle, and thinner
At same time, you may experience hair loss too
Grey hair when they first come in, darker hairs may hide the graying stands.
Eventually, gray hair will grow more rapidly than the normal hair and becomes more noticeable with time.
TREATMENT FOR PREMATURE GRAYING OF HAIR

Home remedies for treating grey hair:

Some facts about hair

v  The average daily loss of hair on the scalp is between fifty to hundred hairs. If the loss is over hundred daily, hair loss will exceed replacement, and eventually you become bald.
v  Hair growth is fastest from the age of sixteen to the late twenties. New hairs grow faster and the growth rate slows down with the increasing length
v  The average number of hairs on the scalp of an adult is 100,000. to 140,000.
v    The hair is affected by the state of the nervous system and by the condition of the circulatory system. As such it is very much interrelated to the functioning of the entire human organism: body, mind and emotions. When you ponder on the opulence of the nerve and blood supply to the head, you will have no difficulty appreciating that whatever adversely affects them, will in the long term, be to the detriment of the hair.
