How Gum Disease Can Increase The Risk of Erectile Dysfunction

Good oral hygiene is not just about brushing and flossing your teeth daily between meals to remove plaque, prevent cavities, eliminating bad breath or having nice white teeth, but rather good oral hygiene can actually save your life and help your sex life.

Oral Hygiene and Heart Disease

A study reported that people who do not practice good oral hygiene are twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease or suffer a stroke than people who brush regularly and visit a dentist twice a year.  The study tracked men with periodontal disease and found people with periodontal disease were twice as likely to have heart disease as those without periodontal disease.

How Gum Disease Can Lead To Erectile Dysfunction

Once in the bloodstream, this plaque-causing bacteria can attach itself to the walls of the arteries or existing plaque in the arteries and lead to coronary artery disease.  When blood flow is constricted, due to plaque build up in the arteries, the heart must pump harder to move blood through these arteries and blood vessels.
In the same study that tracked men with periodontal disease,  2.1% of respondents without erectile dysfunction had advanced periodontal disease, 9.8% of the subjects had mild erectile dysfunction and the same advanced periodontal disease. The most recent  number was 15.8%, and it was representing the percent of persons with moderate or severe erectile dysfunction and advanced periodontal disease.   This study demonstrates the human mouth is full of bacteria, and people who do not brush their teeth regularly, or visit their dentist to remove plaque tend to have higher levels of bacteria  and are more likely to have bleeding, swollen gums and gingivitis, which can lead to periodontal disease.  These openings in the gum line or on the gums are a perfect host to allow dangerous bacteria to enter the bloodstream and potentially cause serious health problems, such as heart disease or erectile dysfunction.

Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

One of the reasons for the dangerous build up of plaque and bacteria on teeth that can lead to heart disease or erection problems is that many people only brush their teeth for 10 – 30 seconds, rather than two minutes recommended by dentists and the American Dental Association.  Rather than using a manual toothbrush, some dentists recommend an electric toothbrush.  This type of oscillating or sonic toothbrush gives  a teeth cleaning similar to a professional cleaning to sufficiently remove plaque.  Also, rechargeable electric toothbrushes have a time to ensure the user is brushing for the full two minutes, and helps promote good oral hygiene and reduce or eliminate dangerous plaque or gum disease.
