PSA Testing is done to provide information on prostate gland abnormalities. Abnormalities range from infection, enlarged prostate gland to cancer. The abbreviation PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen. These antigens are produced by the prostate and is found in the blood. Low levels of PSA are an indication of prostate health. Increased PSA readings can be normal with possible causes being age, sexual activity and rectal exams. Statin usage from Cholesterol lowering medication can also have an affect on PSA tests. Lowering the PSA levels does not necessarily meaning protection or cure.
However medical research is being conducted to determine if Statin has possibility of offering some protection again Prostate Cancer. Researchers have found that the PSA level decreased to match levels of cholesterol in proportion to Statin dosage taken. There are two main reasons for having PSA tests conducted. First reason being to determine if Cancer is possibly present. The PSA test is done as a second opinion after abnormality have been detected by initial examinations or tests conducted. PSA tests are not diagnostic of nature but rather complimentary.
Secondly, to determine the affectivity of treatment on previously diagnosed cancer patients. Patients who had their prostate removed will have no PSA levels present in their blood unless the Cancer has spread or returned.Symptoms of Prostate Cancer are blood in urine or semen, painful or weak erection, weak or painful urination, total inability to urinate, frequent urination specifically at night and pain or stiffness in hips, thighs or low back. However, Prostate Cancer can be present without any symptoms.
With Cancer on the increase a close eye must be kept on any signs of abnormality in the form of pain, discomfort or malformation. If any abnormality is detected a physician must be consulted imminently and necessary tests conducted.
