Doctor Visits and Men's Health

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Many men visit their doctor and come away without revealing their health concerns. This is especially true if they are having problems that are embarrassing or frightening. Men still find it very difficult to talk about a number of issues that affect their health. Sexual difficulties, symptoms that involve the genital and bowel areas, symptoms of mental difficulties such as depression and anxiety, drug and alcohol problems are the most commonly avoided issues. Dealing with the issues is important, so here are some facts and strategies that may help.
Think less act now

  • It is very important to remember to seek help early on. It is easy to avoid a health checkup if you find a painless lump or are able to get by worried but without help. It could save your life to pay your doctor a visit, it could save you money and ultimately it will cause you less stress.

  • Don't let things get really serious before seeing your doctor and seriously consider screening as a part of your lifestyle. Doctors have heard and seen most everything
There is nothing you can say or show the doctor that they have not already heard and seen before. It is their job and they get well paid for seeing parts of our bodies that are less than attractive.
The doctor is not there to judge you. The doctor went into the job to help men in just the situation you find yourself in. The doctor has probably had to see a doctor themselves and found it just as embarrassing and frightening.
List key health problems and worries
It can often help if you make a list before you go to the doctor with the key features of your health problem:

  • List your signs and symptoms

  • List any worries or concerns: money worries, prognosis, confidentiality issues, relationship difficulties, emotional aspects.
  • Anxiety can very easily make you forget or play a situation down that you feel is important. A list will help with that too.
  • Tell the doctor the truth
By this I mean do not avoid facing the facts! It is important to own up to some of your habits that you are not keen for others to know. Some good example of this are smoking habits, the amount of alcohol you drink, sexual practices, etc. Answering questions honestly will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis so that you can get the best treatment.
Do not lie if you need to get your doctor to give you a health check for Mortgage applications, life assurance applications, travel insurance. If you miss something out or avoid information it can make the policy invalid.
    Getting treatment early is best
Go for it. Early contact with a doctor will be the most helpful. Most signs that you think are the result of an illness or disease will be one that is easy to treat. It is just so important to get the help you need.
    Second opinions and changing doctors
If you feel unable to talk to your doctor, get the treatment you feel you need, or have little confidence in your doctor then maybe you need to change to another one. The patient doctor relationship is very important to your health.
